PRL Overview

Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone, also called prolactin (PRL), which is one of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. It promotes breast hyperplasia, milk production and milk discharge, and also participates in various functions of the body, especially the regulation of reproductive function. The determination of PRL concentration is helpful for the diagnosis of hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction. Pituitary tumors can cause hyperprolactinemia, and sometimes it is also related to male impotence. High PRL levels are generally related to galactorrhea and amenorrhea. After drug treatment, PRL decreases menstruation. Can return to normal.

Clinical Significance Of PRL

• People with amenorrhea, infertility and menstrual disorders, regardless of lactation, should be tested for PRL to rule out hyperprolactinemia;
• When PRL is abnormally increased, pituitary prolactinoma should be considered, and further examination is required;
• Elevated PRL levels are also seen in precocious puberty, primary hypothyroidism, premature ovarian failure, poor corpus luteum function, long-term breastfeeding, neuropsychiatric stimulation, and the effects of certain drugs
• Factors such as chlorpromazine, contraceptives, large amounts of estrogen, and antihypertensive drugs can cause PRL to rise; PRL reduction is more common in hypopituitarism and simple prolactin deficiency.
