PRL Overview

Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone, also called prolactin (PRL), which is one of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. It promotes the proliferation of mammary glands, the generation and discharge of milk, and also participates in a variety of functions of the body, especially the regulation of reproductive function. The determination of PRL concentration is helpful for the diagnosis of hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction. • PRL should be measured in patients with amenorrhea, infertility, and menstrual disorders, with or without lactation, to exclude hyperprolactinemia.
• Pituitary prolactinoma should be considered when PRL is abnormally high and further examination is required.
