PRL Overview

Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone, also known as prolactin (PRL), which is one of the hormones secreted by pituitary gland. It can promote the hyperplasia of mammary gland, the production and excretion of milk, and also participate in various functions of the body, especially the regulation of reproductive function. The determination of PRL concentration is helpful to the diagnosis of hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction. Pituitary tumor can cause hyperprolactinemia, sometimes also related to male impotence. High PRL level is generally related to galactorrhea and amenorrhea. After drug treatment, the menstruation can return to normal after the decline of PRL.

Clinical Significance Of PRL

• For amenorrhea, infertility and menstrual disorder, PRL should be measured whether there is lactation or not to exclude hyperprolactinemia;
• When PRL is abnormally high, prolactinoma should be considered and further examination is needed;
• The increase of PRL level was also found in precocious puberty, primary hypothyroidism, premature ovarian failure, luteal dysfunction, long-term lactation, neuropsychiatric stimulation, some drug effects such as chlorpromazine, contraceptives, a large amount of estrogen, antihypertensive drugs and so on; The decrease of PRL was more common in hypopituitarism and simple prolactin deficiency.
