Product Description:
What is a Biogas Plant?
A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester which is used to
treat farm waste or energy crops. These plants use anaerobic
digesters, or air-tight tanks with different configurations, to
convert organic material into biogas (mainly methane and carbon
dioxide). The material fed into the biogas plant may include energy
crops such as maize silage or biodegradable waste such as sewage
sludge and food waste.
Biogas production is further increased when wastewater is mixed
with other residual materials from dairy, sugar, or brewery
industries. For example, when 90% wastewater from a beer factory is
mixed with 10% cow whey, an increase of 2.5 times in biogas
production is observed, compared to wastewater from the brewery
only.
However, biogas production using intentionally planted maize has
been described as being unsustainable and harmful due to its highly
concentrated, intense, and soil eroding character.

Applications:
Food waste, straw, and animal agriculture—including chicken,
cattle, and pig farms—are major sources of air pollution. Food waste released into the atmosphere adds to the air pollution
problem, and decaying organic matter is a significant contributor.
Burning straw and other crop residue releases considerable amounts
of toxic gases into the air, and mass-producing livestock also
causes air pollution.
At industrial-scale animal farms, flatulence and manure produce
large amounts of methane, a “short-lived climate pollutant” that is
25 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the
atmosphere. Animal farms also produce nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide,
ammonia, and other hazardous gases, which significantly contribute
to air pollution.
The agricultural sector, including animal agriculture, has been
responsible for 18 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas
emissions in 2018. It is time to reduce our reliance on
industrial-scale animal farms to reduce our contribution to air
pollution.
