A biogas plant is traditionally an anaerobic digester that processes farm wastes
and energy crops. Such plants involve air-tight tanks that come in
different configurations. The components used can differentiate,
but normally include energy crops such as maize silage or
biodegradable wastes, such as sewage sludge and food waste. All
these materials are then decomposed by microbial activity into biogas, which is composed mostly of methane and carbon dioxide, as well
as a byproduct known as digestate.
Moreover, the biogas production can be increased when wastewater is
also co-digested with other residues from industries like dairy,
sugar, or breweries. One study showed that by mixing 90% of
wastewater from a brewery with 10% cow whey, the production of
biogas was increased by 2.5 times.
However, it has been noted that manufacturing of biogas from
intentionally planted maize is unsustainable and harmful due to the
nature of such intense, concentrated and soil eroding plantations.
