Yarn-dyed fabric means the thread (or yarn) has been dyed first, before weaving. It can be used to make the required fabric.

In the ikat Mudmee traditional weaving from northern Thailand (and Hol from Cambodia), the yarn is not just dyed one colour, it is tie-dye multiple colours and then woven as below picture shown:

Why yarn dyeing is preferred:

In order to improve the fastness (color bleeding) properties, yarn is dyed in cheese dyeing machine. The machine looks like this:

Here, yellow color are yarns.

These dyed yarns are converted to either woven or knitted fabrics depends upon the end use.

Most importantly, sewing threads must have excellent strength and good fastness properties. This cab be achieved in yarn dyeing.
