The 9-Pin J1939 female socket is with a locking ring. Rotating the locking ring to the right place after plugging to a 9-Pin J1939 male receptacle assures that the connector won’t come unplugged accidentally.

The end of Deutsch 9-Pin J1939 female and male plugs can be overmolded or not, according to your needs. If the ends are overmolded, the cables are more sturdy and durable. If not overmolded, the price can be lower because the raw material and labour cost is saved.

This Y cable is for heavy duty commercial vehicles (such as some Freightliner Cascadias and others) that have the J1939 9 pin diagnostic port adjacent to the clutch pedal or in some other inconvenient location.
