Superheaters take saturated steam and heat it to a specific
superheated temperature. When boiler loads or other working
conditions change, it’s vital to keep the superheated steam
temperature normal and within the allowed variation range.
Looking at the power station’s thermal cycle: the higher the
initial pressure and temperature, the better the cycle’s thermal
efficiency. If they’re too low, the steam in the later stages of
the turbine gets overly humid, which can compromise safety. But
here’s the thing—superheater steam temperature is limited by metal
materials. Right now, most power station boilers cap superheated
temperatures at 540–555 degrees because of these material
constraints. To stop the steam from getting too wet in the
turbine’s rear blades, a mid-reheat system is used.
