The waterproof method of cable is generally divided into two kinds of longitudinal water blocking and radial diameter water. Longitudinal water-blocking commonly used are water-blocking yarn, water-blocking powder and water-blocking tape, their water-blocking mechanism is that these materials contain a water-swellable material, when the water is from the cable end or from the sheath After entering the defect, this material will quickly expand with water to prevent the water from further spreading along the longitudinal direction of the cable, thus achieving the purpose of longitudinal waterproofing of the cable. Radial water blocking is mainly achieved by extruding HDPE non-metallic sheath or hot pressing, welding, cold drawing metal sheath.

For XLPE insulated cables above 110kV, metal sheath is mainly used to make the cables meet the waterproof requirements. The characteristic of the metal sheath is that it is completely impermeable, so the cable with the metal sheath has very good radial water resistance. The main types of metal sheath are: hot-pressed aluminum sleeve, hot-pressed lead sleeve, welded wrinkled aluminum sleeve, welded wrinkled steel sleeve, cold drawn metal sleeve, etc.
