LH Overview

Luteinizing hormone is a type of glycoprotein gonadotropin secreted by basophilic cells of the pituitary gland. It primarily promotes ovulation. Under the synergistic action of FSH, luteinizing hormone is formed and progesterone is secreted. In general, the normal value during the non-ovulatory period is 5-25 mIU/ml and lower than 5mIU/ml indicates insufficient gonadotropin function, which can be seen in Sheehan's syndrome. High FSH and elevated LH indicate a decrease in ovarian function, and LH/FSH ≥ 3 is one of the bases for diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome.
