Biocompatible Sapphire Endoscope Lens Scratch Resistant Medical
Grade Optics This biocompatible sapphire endoscope lens is machined from single crystal sapphire, the hardest optical material used in medical devices today. With a Mohs hardness of 9, the sapphire endoscope lens resists scratches from surgical instruments, bone fragments, and abrasive cleaning tools that would permanently damage glass windows. The material is fully biocompatible and routinely used at the distal tip of endoscopes where the lens contacts tissue directly and must survive the harshest part of the instrument lifecycle. Each medical grade sapphire rod lens is ground and polished to a 20-10 scratch-dig surface quality, then verified for dimensional accuracy and surface integrity. Sapphire transmits more than 85 percent across the visible range and offers outstanding chemical resistance to the disinfectants and cleaning agents used in operating rooms. This scratch resistant endoscope lens is available in diameters from 1mm to 5mm with custom lengths, and can be supplied with flat windows, rod geometries, or ball lens configurations for different optical functions. For device teams building minimally invasive surgery instruments, the sapphire endoscope lens eliminates the most common field failure: hazed and scratched distal optics. Technical Specifications
Key Advantages
Product Q&A Why use sapphire instead of glass for an endoscope lens? Sapphire is nearly nine times harder than typical optical glass, so
it resists the scratches that occur when an endoscope tip contacts
bone, teeth, or surgical tools. It also survives aggressive
chemical cleaning and high temperature sterilization without
hazing, which makes it the preferred material for distal windows in
reusable instruments. Is sapphire safe for direct tissue contact? Yes. Sapphire is chemically inert and has a long history of use in
implanted and tissue-contacting medical devices. Our sapphire
endoscope lens material complies with ISO 10993 biocompatibility
requirements, and we can provide material documentation for your
regulatory file. What transmission can I expect from a sapphire endoscope lens? Polished sapphire transmits above 85 percent in the visible range
without anti-reflective coating, and above 90 percent with an AR
coating on both surfaces. Because sapphire is so hard, we apply a
specialized coating process to ensure adhesion, and we verify
durability with tape pull and abrasion tests. Can you produce sapphire ball lenses for endoscope illumination? Yes. In addition to rod and window geometries, we manufacture
sapphire ball lenses from 0.5mm to 5mm diameter for illumination
and image transfer at the endoscope tip. Ball lenses provide wide
angle light collection in a compact form factor ideal for miniature
instruments. |
