Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a therapeutic technique using a suction pump, tubing and a dressing to remove excess exudate and promote healing in acute or chronic wounds and second- and third-degree burns.Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) was first described as cupping in 1500 BC. It was named in 1952 as NPWT. The procedure was used to remove excess fluid in wounds. Machines were developed that were covered by Medicare in 2001.
