Introduction about incubator
Vaccine development and production are critically dependent on
incubators at multiple stages. In the research and discovery phase,
incubators are used to culture the target pathogen (virus or
bacterium) under biosafe conditions for study and attenuation. They
also maintain the cell lines (e.g., Vero, MDCK, HEK-293) used to
propagate viruses for vaccine candidates.
During process development, shaking incubators optimize growth
conditions for bacterial vaccines (e.g., pertussis) or for
yeast/bacterial systems producing recombinant vaccine antigens. In
manufacturing, while large-scale bioreactors are used for bulk
production, CO2 incubators are indispensable in upstream areas for
maintaining master and working cell banks, and for expanding seed
cultures that will be inoculated into bioreactors.
They are also vital in the quality control (QC) lab. QC tests for
sterility, potency, and adventitious agents all require incubation
steps. For example, sterility testing of final vaccine lots
involves incubating samples in fluid thioglycollate medium and
soybean-casein digest medium at specified temperatures to detect
any bacterial or fungal contamination. The incubator’s consistent
performance ensures that every vial of vaccine is not only
effective but also safe, underpinning global immunization programs.
