Q: I need to open an Xbox controller. Will this standard T9 bit work?
A: You must check the screw carefully. Many Xbox controllers use a Security T9 (TR9) screw, which has a tiny metal pin in the center of the star. If your screw has that center pin, this solid T9 bit will not fit; you will need a "Security/Tamper-Proof" hollow-tipped bit. If the screw is a standard, open star, this bit is perfect.
Q: Why are my other T9 bits rounding off so quickly?
A: Cheap bits are made from CR-V (Chrome Vanadium) steel and are usually stamped, not milled. CR-V is too soft for the microscopic tolerances of a T9 recess. When you apply torque, the soft steel yields, and the bit rounds off. S2 steel is vastly harder and maintains its sharp CNC edges significantly longer.
Q: Can I use this in my small iFixit electronics kit?
A: You need to check your handle size. This bit features the industrial standard 1/4-inch (6.35mm) hex base. Many micro-electronics kits use a proprietary, smaller 4mm (5/32") base. Ensure your screwdriver handle accepts standard 1/4" bits. |
