Fire Jockey Pump Introduction:

Any jockey pump consists of three components that include a motor, a controller and a pump. The two major types of jockey pumps are regenerative turbine pumps and centrifugal pumps. The centrifugal type is less energy efficient but requires minimal maintenance than a regenerative turbine pump. On the other hand, a regenerative turbine pump can generate high pressures with little power, but this can create excess pressure in the system. This therefore means that it requires more maintenance.

How To Choose:

It should be chosen so as to get into operation in a period as much as 10 minutes and bring the pressure to the desired level upon detecting a leakage that may be evident in the fire-extinguishing system.
It is selected at 1% of the nominal flow of the flow (min. 1 GPM), and at a pressure of more than 10% of the nominal pressure.

Application:

Large hotels, hospitals , schools,office buildings,supermarkets, commercial residential buildings, metro stations, railway stations, airports, kinds of transportation tunnels, petrochemical plants, thermal power plants, terminals, oil depots, large warehouses and industrial and mining enterprises, etc.

A jockey pump is sized for a flow less than the flow to one sprinkler in order to ensure a system pressure drop. Hence a jockey pump is an important part of the fire pumps control system. Jockey pumps are typically small multistage centrifugal pumps, and do not have to be listed or certified for fire system application. The control equipment for jockey pumps may however carry approvals.
Jockey pumps should be sized for 3% of the flow of the main fire pump and to provide 10psi more pressure than the main fire pump (As per Code IS 15105 : 2002) The application of a jockey pump in a fire protection system is provided by NFPA 20. They are inspected per NFPA 25 "Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems".
