The Serum Separator Tube (SST) is a key blood collection tube designed for obtaining high-quality serum samples for diagnostic testing. It features a unique gel barrier at the bottom and a clot activator inside the tube.

During collection, blood is drawn directly into the tube. The clot activator promotes rapid clotting, typically within 30 minutes. The sample is then centrifuged. During this process, the inert, thixotropic gel undergoes a temporary change in viscosity, moving upward to form a stable, impermeable barrier between the clotted cells and the clear serum supernatant.
