The basic principle of Hydraulic and eddy current dynamometer is to convert the mechanical energy generated by the prime mover into heat energy and take away the heat after cooling by water. The energy emitted by the prime mover cannot be recovered, and energy is also consumed during the conversion process. However, the electric dynamometer can convert the mechanical energy generated by the prime mover into electrical energy and feed it back to the internal grid for use by other equipment.
The loading characteristics of the electric dynamometers are constant torque characteristics from zero speed to rated speed, and constant power characteristics from rated speed to maximum speed, which fully comply with the load characteristics of power machinery. Generally, the hydraulic dynamometer can only be loaded in one direction, while an eddy current dynamometer can be loaded in two directions, it cannot be used as a power back-drag prime mover, while the electric dynamometer can easily realize two-way loading and can be used as a power back-drag prime mover.
