Description of Art Sculptures

Chinese style metal installation sculpture

1. Lost wax casting method. Also known as dewaxing casting, the principle is very simple: wax is made into a wax figure, and then a layer of heat-resistant model material is poured on the mold method, and the mold is heated until the wax begins to melt, and finally burned dry, leaving a hollow shape with the wax figure, and then the metal solution is poured into this hollow. Once the metal solution cools, the mold falls off and an identical wax replica is created. The lost wax casting method is also a major invention in the history of smelting, and the precision and complexity of its casting shape are unmatched by other casting methods. In the Warring States period, China had already used the lost wax casting method. Lost wax casting bronzes with elaborate characteristics were unearthed in Xiashi Chu Tomb in Xichuan, Henan Province and Zeng Hou Yi Tomb in Suixian, Hubei Province respectively. The characteristic of the lost wax casting method is that the model made of wax can be melted, and the casting products with very complicated shapes can be obtained according to its characteristics. The "horse treadle flying swallow" unearthed in the Han tomb of Wuwei, Gansu Province during the Eastern Han Dynasty is set together after lost wax casting, and it is also a fine product of lost wax technology. 2. Ceramic shell casting method. It is a very new technology, which was introduced from industrial casting in the mid-1960s and is now used in at least 95% of commercial fine art foundries. The shell is fixed on colloidal silicon, the wax figure is immersed in glue, removed and then coated with a powdery refractory substance (gypsum). The mixture can be allowed to dry naturally or with the help of a fan. Repeat the previous steps about 7 times so that a 3-8 inch thick shell is formed around the wax figure and gate system. Through steam or rapid heating, the wax figure will be melted, and the shell is heated to a temperature far higher than the solid mold, which can also remove the residual wax, and more importantly, the ceramic components of the shell can be burned, making it stronger to withstand the pressure generated by melting metal.
