TSMR Thickness Shear Mode Resonator Sensor With Crystalline Quartz Plate
A quartz pressure sensor for downhole oilfield applications consists of a quartz piezoelectric resonator hermetically sealed between two quartz end caps. The resonatorand endcaps are made of quartz which is AT cut. An AT cut is preferred because it has the smallest temperature response compared to other available cuts. The quartz resonator is AT cut biconvex thickness shear mode. BonTek is capable of fabricating with high quality both the end caps and the quartz resonators.
Squeezing on a diameter of a TSMR disc aligned along the crystallographic direction causes an AT-cut resonator to increase in frequency, while a BT-cut resonator decreases in frequency. These frequency shifts, due to a static stress bias, occur due to nonlinear effects acting through the third-order elastic stiffness coefficients. The stress pattern in the center of the resonator disc is compressive along the axis of force application and tensile orthogonal to the axis of force application.
