Anaerobic digestion is a process by which organic matter such as animal or food waste is broken down, producing biogas and biofertiliser. This happens in the absence of oxygen in an oxygen-free tank, known as an anaerobic digester.

An anaerobic reactor is largely similar to an aerobic reactor, but there are a few conditions that must be kept in order to sustain an anaerobic environment. It is a simple system that has a high loading rate and can handle high levels of toxins and organic substances. This process uses specialized bacteria, called methanogens, that can form immobilized granules that settle at the bottom and become sludge. This is the principle that underlies the UASB reactor.

An anaerobic fluidized bed can also be constructed. This requires a mixer of microbes (in the form of bi-film) grown on carrier particles and held in place using energy from the feed stream.
