Honeywell, Inc. was founded by Mark C. Honeywell in 1906 and entered the defense industry during World War II by manufacturing aviation products. The special materials business can be traced back to a small company founded by chemist William H. Nichols in 1870. In 1999, it merged with AlliedSignal, Inc. to form the current Honeywell International. Although AlliedSignal is an inherited entity and twice the size of Honeywell, the company still uses the name Honeywell because the latter has a higher brand recognition. On the other hand, Honeywell merged its headquarters into Union Signal's headquarters in Morstertown, New Jersey. As a result, more than a thousand people lost their jobs in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Honeywell's former headquarters was located. A small number of people moved to work at the new headquarters, while the vast majority had to look for new jobs or retire. So, shortly after the merger, the company's stock plunged sharply and did not return to the pre-merger level until 2007.
