Reverse osmosis(RO) is a membrane based separation and dimineralization technology using to separate the dissolved solids (most of them are salt and ion) from the water solution .RO membrane is a perm-seletive barriers which allow some speices to selectively permeate through them while selectively remaining other dissolved speices . The above figure shows how the RO membrane compares with other membrane-based separation technology Seawater desalination(SWRO) is the process of removing salts and other impurities from seawater to produce fresh water suitable for human consumption, agriculture, and industrial use. This process is particularly important in regions with limited access to fresh water sources. Designing a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant involves several critical components and steps to ensure efficient and reliable operation. Here is an overview of the main elements and design considerations: 2.1 pretreatment process Pretreatment is very importment for the SWRO plant to sucessful and cost-effective operation of an RO system .Pretreatment is designd to provent or minimize the membrane fouling ,scaling an degradation membrane performance and materials .Pretreatment techniques and technologies contain three types : mechanical ,chemical and mechanical plus chemical . Appropriate pretreatment process for a given RO system need to be seletived based on the quality of the inlet water to be treaed by RO . Some water ,for example ,underground water (well) with lower concentrations of irons and manganese ,may requires very litte pretreatment .While other water ,such as surface water ( lake and river) ,may need/require extensive pretreatment using sequenced technologies and processing . In the same time ,obtaining the histrorical influent water quality data as well as pilot testing of proposed pretreatment unit operations are both good pratice in designing and optimizaing the pretreatment system .
