Taking high-temperature structural ceramics as an example, ceramic materials are traditionally considered brittle and unimaginable as mechanical components. But in fact, after decades of research, the strength and toughness of ceramics have been greatly improved, and their properties have also been significantly improved. The toughness of some varieties is even close to that of cast iron, and a series of structural materials called high-temperature structural ceramics have emerged. They have entered traditional industrial fields such as mechanical industry, automotive industry, and chemical industry as thermal engine components, cutting tools, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components, promoting product updates and industrial technological transformation, and improving the economic and social benefits of the industry.

The application of high-temperature structural ceramics in heat engines emerged in the 1980s, and the efficiency of heat engines in converting thermal energy into kinetic energy directly depends on their operating temperature. The current working temperature limit of superalloys is about 1080 ℃. The use of high-temperature structural ceramics can increase the working temperature of the heat engine to around 1370 ℃, thereby increasing the maximum theoretical efficiency of the heat engine from about 60% to about 80%. In addition, ceramic components are lightweight, do not require water cooling, have less friction, are resistant to wear and corrosion, and are beneficial for reducing fuel consumption and improving service life. Various high-temperature ceramic thermal engine components have been put into production.
In addition, high-temperature structural ceramics can replace metals in heat exchangers for recycling industrial waste heat, increasing the working temperature by 270 ℃ and achieving a fuel savings rate of up to 50%. The cutting speed used as cutting tools is 10 times that of high-speed steel tools. When used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components (sealing rings, bearings, nozzles, liners, etc.), the service life and efficiency of mechanical and chemical equipment can be significantly improved. Taking refractory materials as an example. The technological transformation of the metallurgical industry closely relies on new refractory materials.
