ON-SITE MACHINING CASE STUDY
As illustrated in the project image below, the MT field machining team recently completed a successful on-site flange repair using the FE12 Flange Facer. In pressure vessel and chemical plant installations, flange sealing faces often suffer distortion from welding or damage from handling. Such imperfections pose a risk to the integrity of the flange seal.
Using the FE12, the MT team re-machined the flange sealing face in place, restoring its integrity and meeting ASME sealing standards. The FE12 excels at flanges under 12 inches, thanks to its externally mounted design, easy alignment, and center-through tool post. Compared to internal-mount systems, the OD-mounted configuration offers superior stability—an essential advantage in precision machining.
PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
The FE12 On-Site Flange Facing Machine is a compact and powerful externally mounted tool designed to recondition damaged or corroded flange sealing surfaces directly at the job site. Whether you're in the oil & gas industry, petrochemical plants, power generation, or offshore operations, the FE12 offers fast and accurate flange repairs without disassembling the piping system. With a machining diameter of 0–12 inches (0–305 mm), it is especially suited for small-to-medium flanges where accessibility and setup time are critical. Engineered for on-site machining professionals, the FE12 can process various flange profiles such as flat face (FF), raised face (RF), ring-type joint (RTJ), tongue & groove, and more. Its quick setup and rigid structure make it ideal for high-precision flange resurfacing, even in vertical or overhead positions.
MACHINE FEATURES
High-Precision Finishing System Equipped with preloaded high-accuracy bearings and dual feed rates, the FE12 delivers smooth or spiral (phonographic) finishes in compliance with ASME B16.5 standards.
Externally Mounted, Compact Design The FE12 installs around the flange’s outer diameter (OD), making it ideal for on-site flange facing in tight, confined, or elevated locations.
Dual Power Options for Flexibility Choose between a pneumatic motor for explosive environments or a electric servo motor for enhanced control and torque during shop or plant maintenance.
Enhanced Portability Lightweight modular structure and rugged transport case allow easy carrying to remote sites, reducing labor and minimizing downtime.
TECHNIAL SPECIFICATIONS
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT POWER OPTION FOR ON-SITE FLANGE FACING
Pneumatic Model (FE12P) The FE12P is driven by a 1.0 kW pneumatic motor, consuming 1.3 m³/min @ 0.6 Mpa. This model is ideal for hazardous or ATEX-compliant environments, ensuring safe operation in explosive areas. Note: Requires a stable compressed air source. If the site is far from the compressor, you may experience pressure drops or insufficient flow, affecting performance. An independent air compressor is recommended in such cases.
Electric Model (FE12E) Powered by a 1.0 kW servo motor, the FE12E is the preferred choice for most customers, especially in workshops, refineries, and plant shutdowns. The servo motor offers stepless speed control and constant torque output, ideal for both rough and fine facing. A remote control pendant allows easy operation, while real-time speed feedback enhances control and safety.
