Introduction to Blowout Preventer (BOP) Rams
BOP rams are core functional components of wellhead blowout
preventers in oil and gas drilling and production operations. Their
primary function is to achieve rapid wellbore sealing, pressure
control, and working condition switching through radial closing and
opening of the rams, serving as critical equipment to ensure
wellhead safety and prevent blowout accidents.
Functionally, through coordinated actions with the BOP cylinder
block and piston rod, the rams can precisely fit the outer walls of
drill pipes, casing pipes, and other tubular products (or fully
seal the wellbore), forming a reliable sealing surface. This
effectively blocks the overflow channels of high-pressure oil, gas,
and mud from the well while withstanding extreme wellhead
pressures, providing a safe operating environment for drilling,
workover, cementing, and other operations. Their performance
directly determines the sealing reliability, pressure-bearing
capacity, and operational response efficiency of the BOP, acting as
a core barrier to safeguard the safety of oil and gas well
construction.
In terms of applications, these rams are widely compatible with
various onshore and offshore oil and gas well sites, suitable for
the entire operational cycle including drilling, completion,
workover, and well testing. They can handle multiple working
conditions such as normal operations, abnormal pressure, and
emergency well shutdowns, serving as key components to realize
wellhead pressure control, prevent uncontrolled blowouts, and
protect personnel, equipment, and the ecological environment.
Based on structural differences of compatible BOP models, the core
products are divided into three series:
- HF-type Forged Rams: Manufactured from high-quality forged materials, they feature high
structural strength and excellent sealing stability. Tailor-made
for the RS Shaffer series BOPs, they offer precise compatibility
and meet the high-pressure sealing requirements of this series
under various complex working conditions.
- U-type Rams: With a unique structural design, they possess superior fitting
sealing performance and working condition adaptability. Precisely
compatible with Cameroon U-type BOPs and RS FC-type BOPs, they
achieve perfect synergy with the equipment to ensure pressure
control and sealing reliability during operations.
- Holder Rams: Produced from specialized high-quality materials, integrating
clamping and sealing functions, they deliver strong clamping
stability and rapid sealing response. Custom-developed for Shaffer
LWS-type BOPs, they accurately match the structural specifications
of this model. During operations, they not only reliably clamp
tubular products to prevent displacement but also achieve
high-pressure sealing, meeting the safety control needs of Shaffer
LWS-type BOPs under various drilling conditions.
The entire series of rams undergo rigorous strength testing and
sealing performance verification, adapting to oil and gas well
operations of different pressure ratings and wellbore
specifications, and providing stable, durable core support for
wellhead safety prevention and control.
