preserving perishable items and enhancing their portability. It
involves freezing materials and then lowering the surrounding
pressure to allow sublimation of water. This technique dates back
to Andean Indians in the 13th century but only became a refined,
widely accessible technology in the 1950s. During World War II, it
was first developed for blood plasma preservation due to its
organic compatibility. Post-war, it expanded to consumer foods.
Notably, in 1890, German scientist Albert Altmann freeze-dried
organ pieces, and in the 1920s, Vansteenberghe and d’Arsonval
patented a method for freeze-drying the rabies virus. The 1950s saw
