What is Hot Melt Road Marking Paint?

 

Hot melt road marking paint, also known as thermoplastic road marking paint, is a durable, heat-applied coating used to create road markings such as lines, symbols, and signs on pavements. It is a solid, powder-based or block material that is melted at high temperatures (typically 180–200°C) and applied to road surfaces, where it cools and hardens to form a tough, reflective marking.
 
Composition:
 
  • Binders: Thermoplastic resins (e.g., hydrocarbon or alkyd-based) that provide adhesion and flexibility.
  • Pigments: For color (usually white or yellow) and visibility.
  • Glass Beads: Added for retroreflectivity, enhancing visibility at night.
  • Fillers: Such as calcium carbonate or silica for durability and cost-efficiency.
  • Additives: Improve flow, weather resistance, and curing.
Application Methods:
 
  • Screed: Extruded in precise shapes for structured markings.
  • Spray: Applied for faster, thinner lines.
  • Preformed: Pre-cut shapes melted onto the surface.

Steps to Use Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint

 

  1. Prepare the Road Surface
    • Ensure the road is clean, dry, and free of debris, loose material, or oil. A well-prepared surface is crucial for proper adhesion.
  2. Heat the Paint
    • Start with thermoplastic paint in solid form (pellets or blocks).
    • Melt it in a specialized melter or pre-heater to approximately 200°C (392°F). The temperature must be controlled to keep the paint fluid without degrading it.
  3. Apply the Paint
    • Use a specialized machine to apply the molten paint. There are two common methods:
      • Extrusion: The paint is pushed through a die to form precise lines or shapes.
      • Spray: The paint is sprayed for larger areas or faster application.
    • Aim for a thickness of 1.5–3 mm for optimal durability and adhesion.
  4. Add Glass Beads
    • Sprinkle glass beads onto the wet paint while it’s still hot. These enhance reflectivity, making the markings more visible at night or in low-light conditions.
  5. Allow Cooling
    • The paint cools and hardens quickly, often within minutes. However, keep traffic off the area until it’s fully set to ensure a strong bond with the road.
