Thermoplastic hot melt paint, also known as hot melt marking paint, is a type of powder coating primarily used for road surface markings. It’s composed of synthetic or non-polymeric resins, glass beads, pigments, and fillers like calcium carbonate or sand. The paint is heated to around 200°C (392°F) in a hot melt kettle, turning it into a liquid that can be sprayed or applied onto roads. Upon cooling, it forms a thick, durable polymer layer that’s wear-resistant, bright, and reflective.

  • Reflectivity: Often includes glass beads to enhance visibility at night by reflecting vehicle headlights.

How to Apply Thermoplastic Paint:
 
  1. Prepare Surface: Clean road to remove dirt and debris; ensure it’s dry. New asphalt needs 14-30 days to cure; concrete may need primer.
  2. Heat Paint: Melt thermoplastic powder in a kettle at 180-200°C, stirring until liquid.
  3. Mark Layout: Outline lines with chalk or templates per regulations.
  4. Apply:
    • Screed: Use a screed box for 1-3 mm thick lines.
    • Spray: Use a spray machine for 0.5-1.5 mm layers on large areas.
    • Sprinkle glass beads immediately for reflectivity.
  5. Cool & Inspect: Let cool 5-15 minutes; check thickness, adhesion, and reflectivity.
  6. Clean Up: Remove excess material; clean equipment.
Tips: Work above 5°C, avoid wet conditions. Wear protective gear and follow manufacturer guidelines.
