Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices for controlling equipment. They feature a button or rotary knob that mechanically opens or closes contacts to start or stop motors. Unlike automatic starters, manual versions don't break the control circuit during power loss, which may cause motors to restart when power returns - an important safety consideration.

When the engine is activated (via button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear) and turns the engine's flywheel. This cranking action initiates the combustion process in petrol and diesel engines. Once the engine is running, the starter motor automatically disengages.
