Closed Loop Robotic Buffing Machine For Precision Stepped Plug OD Shoulder Chamfer

Close Loop Robotic Buffing Machine For Stepped Plug A stepped plug looks deceptively simple: two cylinders, a shoulder, maybe a chamfer. But every face has its own surface geometry, wheel-to-surface angle, and finish requirement. The shoulder transition between faces is exactly where hand buffers either leave a ring mark or gouge the corner radius. The LR-POLISH-B-SP is a closed-loop robotic buffing machine built around stepped plugs, shoulder bushings, valve-seat inserts and similar precision stepped-cylinder parts. It buffs the top face, OD barrel, shoulder step and chamfer in a single, programme-controlled cycle. Gloss-unit (GU) feedback closes the loop so every part leaves the cell at the same finish level, not dependent on operator performance. Closed-Loop Gloss Control Every recipe carries a gloss target (GU) set from your customer's finish specification. After each completed cycle, the inline sensor measures the actual GU on the top face and OD:
This closed-loop function makes the machine self-correct for wheel wear, ambient humidity, compound variation and incoming part condition without operator involvement. Top-Face Concentric-Mark Removal The lathe-turned top face carries concentric tool spirals. Buffing these out requires the wheel path to cross the spiral pattern, not follow it. The LR-POLISH-B-SP uses a spiral-outward robot path combined with C-axis part rotation at a controlled, offset speed — so the wheel always sweeps across the toolmark direction rather than along it. The result is uniform, direction-free surface on the top face. Precision OD Protection The stepped plug's OD and top-face datum often have tight tolerances (press-fit, sealing seat, mould guide). The cell's fixture design and force limit protect these surfaces:
Scenario Assumptions & Payback Drivers Typical scenario includes 2 skilled buffers across 2 shifts dedicated to stepped-plug buffing.
Frequently Asked Questions What does "closed loop" actually mean on this machine? After each part's buffing programme finishes, an inline gloss-unit
(GU) sensor reads the surface. If the result meets the recipe
target, the part passes. If it falls below target, the cell runs a
correction pass automatically and re-measures. If still below, the
part is flagged. The machine self-corrects for wheel wear, compound
variation and incoming part roughness without operator involvement. Can the machine remove lathe concentric toolmarks without leaving
radial wipe marks? Yes — the robot uses a spiral-outward path combined with C-axis
part rotation at an offset speed, so the wheel always crosses the
toolmark direction rather than following it. The result is a
direction-free, uniform surface on the top face. How does the cell handle the shoulder step without leaving a ring
mark? The wheel decelerates and re-angles before contacting the shoulder
corner (soft-entry motion). Phase 1 (top face) and Phase 2 (OD
barrel) overlap at the shoulder in a controlled handoff — the wheel
is never dragged across the corner at full buffing force. Will buffing remove material and change precision OD dimensions? The cell's force limits and path boundaries are set so the wheel
contacts only the surface roughness layer — not the base dimension.
Maximum per-pass stock removal is minimal, well below any tolerance
band. The fixture also protects the datum faces. |
